Most of us know the infamous meme that makes its rounds on social media right before the beginning of May (and if you don’t know, go check out our 05/01/26 Fun Fact Friday post on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn). As we sat in our Business Development meeting last week, I was completely taken aback though. It’s LITERALLY going to be May 1st on Friday!! “Great Scott”!! This year the flux capacitor has us flying by at 1.21 gigawatts. So like Doc and Marty McFly, let’s fire up this month’s BBK Backstage and look back at another incredible month.

Let's be straight, April was no joke. The BBK staff did not fool around, and the shenanigating was in full force right from day one. Melanie Bush and the Directors scheduled their Quarterly Planning for April 1st. Brave souls. That left an office wide open for prank planning at its finest. Full transparency? I was hesitant to walk in. The first thing I noticed was the door to our internal hallway closed (which is very rare) with a simple sign in bold black letters: "DO NOT ENTER." I'd be lying if I said I didn't pause. I suspiciously opened the door only to find the other three hallway doors closed with the same sign on each. The normally spacious hallway suddenly felt very small. When I finally made it through to the bullpen, there were all the bookkeepers, peacefully (and probably a little anxiously) tackling their beginning-of-month deadlines. Nothing to see here. Kudos to the Shenanigators and their Jedi mind trick. You succeeded. And fair warning, I have a feeling we won't be waiting until next April Fool's Day for the next one.

The very next day we completely switched gears. Our office went from much needed shenanigans to hosting our second Lunch & Learn of 2026. Finding a relevant topic was easy; it’s tax season. We landed on “The Final Countdown: Last Minute Need to Know Tax Facts”. With the tax deadline looming and the first week of April already upon us, the timing couldn't have been better. We understand how stressful tax season can be for individuals and business professionals alike. Now, finding a CPA to speak right before the tax deadline? That took some convincing. Luckily, our friend and close associate Tim Freese, a CPA mastermind and Managing Partner at Freese, Peralez & Associates, agreed to join us after some clever persuasion. His wealth of knowledge paired with his laid-back, unfiltered humor had the room locked in from start to finish. As I said in his introduction that day, whoever said CPAs aren't funny clearly hasn't met Tim.

We took time for our families in April with the office closed on Good Friday. I’ve always loved that Better Bookkeepers leads with a “family first” mentality and genuinely encourages a healthy work-life harmony. You know you’re somewhere special when it feels like home and your team feels like family. Yes, deadlines and heavy workloads can sometimes feel like chaos, but when you love who you work with, showing up is the easy part.

Several staff rallied together for the Splendora ISD Education Foundation's 'Bubbles, Bags, and Bingo.' There were jokes about parking, a white-knuckle carpool ride, one Uber called to avoid an 11-minute walk from the car, and for one of us, this was somehow the SECOND charity bingo event of the day. Someone also slipped Julie's birthday to the announcer, and the entire room helped us celebrate her. By the end of the night, two of us walked out with designer bags, one with a door prize that included a tiara (which we fully expect to see again during her birthday MONTH in May), and all of us left with full hearts and sore cheeks. Was I a little salty I didn't win a bag? Maybe. But having the BBK family together? Priceless.

In true BBK fashion, we closed out April by shutting down May 1st to pour into our team and enjoy a day together. Our Quarterly Team Building Day did NOT disappoint (sorry, downstairs neighbors), but you'll have to come back next month to hear all about it from our next BBK Backstage author. Trust me, you won't want to miss it.

I’ll leave you this month the same way we started, with a little wisdom from Doc himself:

“Your future hasn’t been written yet. No one’s has. Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one!”
